Thanksgiving - A Time to Give Thanks

EDITORIAL

Let's be thankful for what we have got, not ungrateful for what we have not.

We knew we would have a new President, that about 50% of the voters would not have chosen and about 50% were happy to accept.

A Strategy to Win the Peace

One of America’s great philosophers, Yogi Berra, has been often quoted saying, “It’s déjà vu all over again.” Well, it sure feels like that when every couple of years some portion of the Palestinian leadership, that goes unchallenged, reigns rockets over Israel. Isn’t it time to come up with a strategy not just to “win” the temporary war but to actually move towards “winning” the eventual peace?

The British Response to the War Between Israel and Hamas

I was struck by an article which appeared in The New York Times on November 19th reporting on the position of the British government on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Almost everyone acknowledges that the Hamas government in Gaza started the war, except for their Muslim supporters of Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, etc. Hamas and almost every Muslim country, except for Egypt and Jordan which have peace treaties with Israel, are in a formal state of war with Israel. Israel, in response to near daily rocket bombardment of towns, villages and cities in southern Israel this year, assassinated the Hamas terrorist Ahmad Jabari directing the rocket program and its launchings.

The Mainstream Media -
Partisan, Prejudiced and Unprofessional

The tragedy in Tucson. Six people killed and a US Congresswoman marked for assassination fighting for her life and hopeful recovery. It touched the heart of all Americans, dominated our conversations and consumed the news media. In a compassionate nation such as ours this was by no means unusual. It touched us. It angered us. It made us pray for those struggling to survive and recover. It made us respond to nine year old Christina-Taylor Green as if she was one of our own and that tore at our hearts.

The Wonder That is Arizona

Americans love games with rules, which is why the great American game is baseball. There are strike zones, foul lines, and even infield fly rules. To all these, the participants are familiar and they don't expect surprises. This is why Washington politicians and everyday citizens should not be baffled by Arizonans deciding to enforce the unenforced federal laws on immigration. The mystery is why Washington is surprised and, presumably, angered by this act.

Passover and the Modern Day Ten Plagues

On Passover we recount the story of the miraculous escape of the Jewish People from 400 years of bondage in Egypt and of their subsequent journey to freedom in a land of their own; the land of their forefathers; the Land of Israel.
Today, the State of Israel has become the veritable homeland of the Jews the world over but there seems to be a feeling in the world that the other nations want to effectively enslave Israel, which we believe they take to be synonymous with enslaving the Jewish People, by having it conduct itself according to their demands.

America: Don't Change What Makes You Great

For far too long, it seems that America has been in a crisis mode. We have been told that our country is on the brink of disaster and that if we don’t institute drastic policies immediately, sometimes within days, then we are doomed to a depression the likes of which most of us have never seen. We have been sold a bill of goods that there is no time to discuss the issues or evaluate the options and that only fast action can avert economic Armageddon.

Redefining Peace in the Middle East

By this time, it should be clear as crystal, that neither Hamas nor Hezbollah nor Moslem extremists nor Moslem terrorists will ever want to co-existence with nor do they intend to co-exist with the State of Israel. Each one of these groups has one great desire in common with the others and hopes and prays and will do everything in its and in their collective power to bring it about: that there will be no State of Israel. That long term situation has been joined by a similar brand of anti-Israel focus: For some reason, it seems that every country in the world continues to demand that the State of Israel negotiate a peace agreement that will allow Gaza, the West Bank and a section of the City of Jerusalem to become part of an independent Palestinian State, which would literally be just a stone's throw from the Jewish State.

McCain For President

John McCain is an American war hero who marches to his own drumbeat, clearly puts his country ahead of himself, loves his country as it is, values its constitution, favors free enterprise as the preferred economic model, and offers excellent attributes for understanding and running our nation. What does Barak H. Obama offer? Surprisingly no executive experience having never run a business, governed a state or lead men in life or death situations. Also very little appetite for legislative leadership. How could anyone voting “present” through most of his elected career ever be considered a leader … let alone a contributing participant? Obama becoming President would be the ultimate case of on the job training, and as Jerry Seinfeld might say “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.” Read More...

Politics or Principle

United Nations Week, attended by the world's leaders is always accompanied by protestors. And with any leader able to address the UN General Assembly, there is always drama. Maybe it's Yasser Arafat wearing his kaffiyeh and his gun. Or Khruschev pounding his shoe on a desk. Or Hugo Chavez cursing George Bush [who says Osama bin Laden and democrats ever had a monopoly on that]. Or Ahmadinejad threatening to wipe Israel off the map. Jewish groups have lead the protests against this latest Hitler in training, and people from all backgrounds, religions and political persuasions have gladly joined together in this effort - that is until now. Energy Crisis and Crisis of Leadership

Every few years the price of gasoline goes through the roof. When it finally hits the consumer in the pocketbook the results are anger, frustration and the feeling that our representatives, senators and president are not only uncaring but incompetent as well. And these feelings are not only very real but also very accurate. Read More...

Mid-East Photo Op

It seems like deja vu all over again and only a philosopher with the vision of Yogi Berra has the aptitude to make sense of it all. Since it is off season for Yogi, I guess we'll give it a try. Why do American Presidents feel that their last shot at building a positive legacy must revolve around getting the Palestinians, whoever is passing themselves off at that time as "the" Palestinians, and the Israelis together to establish the framework for a just and lasting peace? Turkey and the House - No way to treat a friend

In what was a remarkably foolish gesture, in our opinion, the United States House of Representative's Foreign Affairs Committee, under the leadership of Tom Lantos [D-CA] and with the full support of the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi [D-CA], passed a non- binding resolution declaring Turkey, then known as the Ottoman Empire, guilty of genocide of the Armenian people in 1915. The Danger of Immediate Withdrawal

Most people would acknowledge that the war in Iraq has gone very poorly to date. An invasion meant to eliminate weapons of mass destruction and lend to stabilization of the region has accomplished neither goal, although it has rid the world of a brutal dictator. Iraq is teetering on the edge of civil war, while bombings and death of American forces as well as Iraqis are a regular occurrence. Read More...

A new year in freedom or fear?

On Rosh Hashanah it is inscribed, on Yom Kippur it is sealed . our fate, that is, for the New Year. Who will live and who will die? How many will die by drowning, how many by illness, how many by all other means beyond our control? Read More...

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

The core principle of Negotiations 101 is never give up something for nothing. Yet that is exactly what Israel did … twice. They left the safety buffer zone in Southern Lebanon for nothing. They left Gaza, uprooting large numbers of Israeli settlers in the process for nothing. Read More...

When Good People Say Nothing
& Bad Ones Say Too Much

When the two American soldiers were abducted in Iraq [a third was murdered in this attack as well] and later found brutalized beyond recognition and hacked to death in the most barbaric way, most of us were deeply saddened, shocked and immensely sorry for their family and friends. Read More...
