Brussels's Chief Rabbi Attacked by Arabs

The Simon Wiesenthal Center protested to Belgium's Ambassador to the United States, Alex Reyn, over anti-Semitic attack against the Chief Rabbi of Brussels, Albert Guigui, by Arabic thugs.

The Center's European office reported that the Chief Rabbi of Brussels was assaulted at the Clemenceau Metro Station by five Arab thugs. In addition to personally assaulting him, the attackers hurled anti-Semitic slurs in Arabic calling him a 'dirty Jew.' They then scratched and kicked him in the face.

The letter of protest to the Ambassador, written by Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the Simon Wiesenthal read in part: "This is an outrage against the Jewish community, which comes at a particularly sensitive time and should be dealt with severely by the authorities. I am sure that your government agrees that this insane act is intolerable and that those who perpetrated this crime should be arrested and brought to justice."

Rabbi Hier also asked for a full investigation into the matter and urged that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
