The Maturity of the Israeli Business Community

by Gad Nahshon

The Israeli business community is mature. We can learn about it from Alma -- the Israeli Association for Business and Arts. Its house magazine is "Alma Matter". The chairperson of this non-profit organization is Ora Goldenberg. And among its board members are famous businessmen such as Doc Lautman, Leon Recanuti, Yossi Halami, Aliza Olemert, Dan Gilerman and other dignitaries.

This organization has promoted a linkage between Israeli artists and the business community. It promotes symbiotic relations between these two worlds. It is a referral service which links arts and its sponsors and patrons within the business community in Israel.

Among its many activities:

  1. honoring patrons or sponsors with its prestigious Friend of Arts Awards, and

  2. Alma together with Sotheby's Israel featured a first time public auction of sponsorship for leading arts and culture events in Israel. The sponsor could select his choice: Acre Festival, exhibitions, Israeli ballet groups, or supporting projects in the Israeli theaters.

It's a great idea: the business community must involve itself with the world of arts or performing arts as a sacred mission. Ora Goldenberg is happy with the new achievements but she states that Alma did not reach it in the Promised Land.
