Altruism: A 'Medical' Approach

For your knowledge: 'The Institute for Research on Unlimited Love' was established recently at the School of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Ohio. Its goal: to research the issues of altruism, compassion, and service. Dr. Stephen G. Post is the President of the Board of Directors. The Institute has also an International Advisory Board as well.

In an effort to advance scientific knowledge and widen public awareness about unselfish love, volunteerism, and service, a new not-for-profit institute has issued a request for research proposals on a subject that is drawing significant attention from academics, health care professionals, and theologians.

The Institute for Research on Unlimited Love defines "unlimited love" as altruistic affirmation and care for all humanity without exception. A free-standing 501(c)(3) located at the school of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University, the Institute was begun in 2001 with an initial endowment of $4 million. It will seek to create a body of scientifically-based research on what is sometimes called "other-regarding" love, that is, altruistic, unselfish expressions and actions wholly dedicated to the benefit of others, as manifested in compassion, kindness, and volunteerism.

Letters of Intent and Application should be sent to: Stephen G. Post, Ph.D., President, Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, School of Medicine, Room TA 214, Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland Ohio, 44106-4976
