10 Torah Scroll Take Flight to Israel

New York - The National Council of Young Israel organized a solidarity mission for 13 Rabbis who carried 10 Torahs with them on their EL AL flight to Israel. One Torah is less than 12 inches high and will be placed on an Israeli Navy submarine.

All the Torahs, to be used by Israeli soldiers, will be presented to Brigadier General/Chief Rabbi of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Yisrael Weiss. A formal dedication of these Torahs is to take place at the main Rabbinic army base near Jerusalem which will be attended by political and military dignitaries.

EL AL Vice President and General Manager in North & Central America, Nira Dror states, "It is symbolic that these Torahs traveled to their new home on Israel's national airline. We also appreciate the sincerity of the Rabbi's who are showing their solidarity by going to Israel on EL AL and encouraging others to do the same upon their return."

During the past 3 years, Young Israel has carried on EL AL almost 100 torahs to the IDF which have been donated by private individuals and synagogues in the United States. Shown prior to departure with the group is Rabbi Pesach Lerner (center), Executive Vice President of the National Council of Young Israel and the leader of this mission.

EL AL. It's not just an airline. It's Israel.
